A new design Motel | Motel one at the Waterlooplein area

Amsterdam has many hotels, one more exciting then the other maybe but definitely new and cool you may call the new Hotel from the Motel One group. I had the pleasure to join the press event some time ago and loved the design of the hotel by Piet Hein Eek. Inspired by the nearby Waterlooplein and its popular flea market, the design concept of the Motel One Amsterdam – Waterlooplein draws heavily on the idea of up cycling totally fitting the work of Piet Hein Eek.

The One Lounge was created with the help of this internationally renowned artist Piet Hein Eek and demonstrates how antiques and used items can be combined to establish a whole new character. Featuring walls covered with old windows, doors and cabinets, chandeliers that have been assembled from lights purchased at flea markets, and a fantastic workbench with specially created table lamps, the lounge is sure to spark your creativity and invite you to linger.
Rembrandt, our famous Dutch painter lived a stone’s throw away from the design hotel in the Rembrandt House, and his style of contrasting light and shadows can be seen in the One Lounge. Natural and handcrafted materials round off the design concept of the affordable Motel One Amsterdam – Waterlooplein.

Menage a Trois Amsterdam | Nieuwmarkt Area (CLOSED)

Menage A trois is a new fashion initiative in Amsterdam by AnneMarie Kramer, Bridgitte Kleyn and Vanessa Tersteeg and can be found within the Droog Design building, one of Amsterdam's finest stores to discover Dutch design and grab a coffee or glass of wine in the Droog cafe, or if the weather is nice wander through the Rossana Orlandi-esque garden. When visiting Droog the other day my eye caught the huge black Limited edition ceramic tulip vase by Eduard Hermans at the all new Menage A Trois store in the back of the ground floor.

At Menage a Trois you will not only find fashion brands like Rick Owens, Maison Margiela and Y/Project but also a handpicked collection of art and beauty objects. I was immediately sold by both the collection and the atmosphere in the store, and also really happy to see my favourite French brand Mad et Len represented at the store. The furniture consisting of sculpture like objects is designed in collaboration with product designer GuidoToonen.

Black Gold Amsterdam - Coffee & Vinyl | Nieuwmarkt area

The 'coming soon' sign had just been taken off when I visited Black Gold Amsterdam the day after their opening party, and this week a new window sticker with the iconic Italian espresso maker will be marking the new Coffee & Vinyl spot at 'Korte Koningsstraat'.

Siebrand van Hengel, owner of Black Gold Amsterdam always had a passion for music and coffee. His dream starting his own business where he could combine the two made him startup his own crowd funding project last year. A year later the shop opened it's doors. 
"Good music deserves vinyl. I want to share my passion for music (with a preference for Seventies soul, deep funk, P-funk, soul,boombap hip hop and jazz) and create a place where people discover the magic of dust and grooves" Siebrand explains. 

While visiting the store music was playing in the background and I had a taste of "white label" coffee... A perfect combination...I will be back for more soon!

Anna + Nina | Waterlooplein & Pijp area

Over the Summer Anna + Nina opened their second store on Kloveniersburgwal, near Chinatown and the Waterlooplein flea market. Find the first Anna + Nina store at De Pijp area, where the two friends started some years ago. Next to their own jewellery brand, both stores are filled with different accessories for the home, and if you are looking for a present it is the perfect spot to shop for.

Ecomama | A new green and conscious boutique hostel

Some time ago I showed you Filter, a new cozy coffee corner with a raw and industrial look. Today some pictures of Boutique hostel Ecomama, located in the same building! When I visited it just opened it's doors and I got a little tour through the rooms that were being photographed at that moment.

Expect different ways of sleeping, and some really uniqued and inviting rooms for all kind of travellers. I made some pictures in the inviting lobby and kitchen area, where you can make your own meal and enjoy the amazing space. And if you love to have breakfast and a good coffee before exploring the city, you can visit Filter! 

Our current obsessions | Noir

Graphic designer Joachim Baan, owner of Another Something & Co and  co-owner of Tenue de Nîmes kicked of with a new project. They call it ‘Our Current Obsessions’ "an excuse for all Jo’s hobbies that went a bit (or completely) out of hand" The project will combine the basic principles of an art gallery with retail and is always based on one particular online and offline theme. One of those obsessions became the first chapter of this new concept: World of Black.

For this first chapter Joachim teamed up wit Swiss lifestyle label Gertrud & George in a show called NOIR. Gertrud & George, known for their beautifully crafted black accessories line, have their full collection of 21 pieces on display in Joachim’s Amsterdam based studio. 

On top of that he presents a ‘world of black:’ a diverse selection of curated goods and objects from all over the globe. On the walls (and window) art pieces by Ramon Haindl, Raymond Lemstra & Sybren Karst, Raymond Teitsma and Guido de Boer; on the shelves a mix of products in collaboration with Tenue de Nîmes, Skins Cosmetics, Mendo Books, Azami, Chocolatl, Mobilia Woonstudio and Miscellaneous together with a personal curation of goods by (amongst others) AcneJr, Nothing, Floris Hovers and a selection of Joachim's personal curiosa like stuffed animals, skulls and African dolls.
